Call for United Prayer for Peace along the Thai-Cambodian Border
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Thailand expresses its deepest concern regarding the escalating tensions and violence along the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Grounded in its faith that upholds the sanctity of human life, the Catholic Church earnestly appeals for unwavering adherence to international law, which must always protect and never harm civilians—especially women, children, and the elderly—even during times of conflict. The most tragic outcome of violence is that ordinary people, particularly those residing in border areas, become victims, facing displacement, loss of life and property, and the constant threat of ongoing violence.
The Church recognizes that the current border conflicts are deeply rooted in historical complexities, frequently exploited for political gain, and often distorted to incite nationalist sentiments, divert public attention from domestic issues, and serve the agendas of certain political factions. The Church, therefore, reiterates the dangers of extreme nationalism, which can lead to division and severe conflict, undermining human dignity and hindering genuine efforts for peaceful resolution, sustainable development, and the well-being of the people.
In the spirit of fraternity, the Church therefore appeals for sincere dialogue, with increased diplomatic efforts and open channels of communication between all parties to find just solutions that respect human dignity and to seek common paths towards lasting peace and genuine reconciliation.
On this occasion, we invite all Christians to unite in prayer for peace by offering the Holy Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and the recitation of the Rosary in churches throughout Thailand. We implore the Lord, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, to grant God’s mercy to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the violence, and to inspire and transform the hearts of those involved in making decisions in this situation, so that they may turn towards each other to cooperate in building peace, bring this conflict to a swift end, and bestow lasting peace.
